It depends. How hard do you want to work? It can be free if you want to do all the work yourself and you have a vehicle that will transport all of your things. That’s if you consider your time free. If you consider your time to be very valuable this may be your most expensive and time consuming option. Because a professional can probably move you much faster and with less effort since they have all the right equipment, tools, material and know how to get it done.
It could also cost you a small fortune in medical bills if you hurt yourself moving something heavy without the tools or techniques movers use. Let us send a representative or do a video survey if you’d like a quote. Rate quotes can be done over the phone, via email or text.
Yes, absolutely. Only we are not an insurance agency so we can’t call our coverage insurance. Straight talk alert: All customers goods are covered at least with basic liability coverage automatically. Better coverage requires the payment of a premium up front and must be purchased prior to the commencement of services. You can’t add it after something get broken. And you can’t take the coverage off the bill if as per normal, everything goes swimmingly. Yes, people ask sometimes. Just an fyi, insurance fraud is against the law but people who try to defraud a moving company are “smart consumers”. Go figure.
The backstory: Basic liability costs you nothing and protects your goods at .60 per pound per article. This is based on regulations set by the Public Utilities commission in California and the US Department of Transportation nationwide, and it is the same for all licensed movers. It is not full coverage, not even close. Think about it, how could movers afford to insure the billions of dollars worth of goods that they haul annually, for free. That’s why the regulators came up with this “limited liability” coverage. If you go with the basic coverage and something gets broken, the mover will just pay the weight of the item times .60, no matter whose fault the damage is. You will get a prompt check from us or we will try to repair it for you if that is less expensive. In reality, that never happens. You can’t repair a chair that weighs 20 pounds for less than $12. Most reputable repair firms charge at least $150 to survey the damage and make an estimate. Really!
This is not a choice we make, we are a highly regulated industry. If you want better coverage ask your representative about Replacement coverage. It’s actually pretty inexpensive if you get one of the deductible options. And always ask your insurance agent (your actually insurance expert that you pay for all your insurances) if your homeowners or renters policy will cover your goods in transit, because many of them do per the terms and limitations of the policy. Because that is insurance. And accidental damage and or loss is the reason you have insurance, right? There is also third party coverage you can get from specialty insurance companies if you need it. If you plan to move valuable items, check into this subject or ask your Champion representative to tell you all about it. And always tell your mover which items are really valuable and need extra care. We don’t always know until you tell us.
All of our movers are employees and they make a living wage. After a certain period with us, they are vested and become eligible for benefits.
Good question. I’m working on that one. I’ll get back to you.
